READ30

Dyslexia Awareness Month

Oxford Public Schools Student Services and Special Education Department is launching the Read30 Initiative. We invite all families to join us in committing to read together for 30 minutes each day.

Why it Matters:

Research shows that just 30 minutes of daily reading with children has lifelong benefits for their learning, relationships, and emotional well-being.

Builds Vocabulary & Language Skills
Children who are read to daily hear up to 1.4 million more words by age five than those who are not. This exposure boosts language development and prepares them for stronger communication skills.

Supports Academic Success
Kids who read for fun daily score higher on reading and math assessments. A recent study found they perform, on average, two grade levels above peers who don’t read regularly.

Improves Focus & Emotional Growth
Reading strengthens attention span, patience, and emotional regulation. Stories help children practice empathy and understand perspectives different from their own.

Strengthens Family Bonds
Shared reading time fosters connection, lowers stress, and helps children associate reading with comfort and joy.

Creates Lifelong Learners
Students who read daily are more likely to graduate and continue learning throughout life.

“Just 30 minutes a day creates a compounding effect — boosting not only literacy skills but also emotional connection and resilience in children.”
